Blessing of the Fleet

Pacific City’s Blessing of the Fleet is an annual event held around Cape Kiwanda beach. Pacific City is one of the very few places in the United States where dory boats are still utilized. In case you didn’t know, dories are flat-bottomed boats with an inboard-outboard motor. The boats didn’t always have a motor. In the old days they are equipped with oars and the fishermen rowed them out to sea.

Most days you have to wake up really early to catch a glimpse of these boats with their dorymen. Most of the time, captains set out for sea before 6:30 a.m. to avoid the bad winds and harsh weather conditions during late afternoons. They have to set out to sea as early as possible.

But during the Blessing of the Fleet, fishing families of Pacific City and their boats will gather on Cape Kiwanda Beach for a brief ceremony with the local clergy. During this ritual, the fishermen pause to remember those who passed away and ask for a successful fishing season in the coming months. You’ll be able to see boats decorated for the occasion. Once the Blessing of the Fleet is done, the dories are launched from the beach to Ferry Flowers and up to Haystack Rock.

The Blessing of the Fleet marks the start of Dory Days in Pacific City. This is an event held as a tribute to the most popular water vessel in the area. Every year a Dory Day parade is held where participants decorate their boats and the best decorated one wins a prize. The Dory Day parade is fun for everyone. Participants of the parade usually throw flowers and candies into the crowd. Aside from the decorated boats, there are also marching bands, parade floats, horses and other livestock, antique cars, and a lot more.

Other Dory Days events in Pacific City are the Artisan Fair held in the downtown area, a Marine Fair and Fish Fry at Cape Kiwanda. Be sure to hunt for bargains during the festivities.
